Me and the RaspberryPi /2

<< Me and the RaspberryPi /1

If you are looking for the final release of the case for Raspberry Pi, maybe you are searching for this page.

At last I can show what I consider the final result of the process of creation of my case for the RaspberryPi minicomputer!

It’s been not an easy task, because the board has been designed for the minimum dimensions and cost, and some choices are not suitable for a good design for the case.

As an example, the position of the USB connector is too prominent related to the network connector, and a different RCA video connector could have been chosen, so that its axis was at the same distance as the audio plug from the PCB.Moreover, some holes could be provided to fix the board to the case using screws; a robust fixing method would be desirable in such a little PCB with so many cable connections, while I had to invent a snap-fit assembly.

All the images are renderings made in Blender and Yafaray. I’m waiting for a real 3D printed prototype from Shapeways; and I’m waiting the “announcement” from RaspberryPi staff, so that I can buy my own board to test this case.

After that, I’m planning to make it available for printing on my space on Shapeways.

For now you can see the model of the case uploaded here, and the LED lightguides here.

As you can see from the last image, the case was designed taking into account the possibility to make it by injection molding, so that it could be a (rightly) cheap case for a cheap computer!

        Ciao!

Please, oh please design and make available a version of the case that has a removable section above the 26 pin header.

It would be very cool if there was a way to set up a path at Shapeways where an add-on designer could create a replacement part for the removable piece with the height and connector openings for his design.

I think a major use of the Raspberry Pi will be for people to create useful attached functionality for sale (I want to do something insanely cool with a high quality multi-channel audio DSP add-on board.)

    • Marco Alici / Mar 9 2012 16:31

      Dear Robert,
At the moment all my efforts are towards making the case suitable to house the Raspberry Pi. After that, all variants could be possible.

Be calm, guys: I’ve just started! 😉

      "Mi piace"

      • Robert Cain / Mar 9 2012 20:06

Marco, if the design is in progress, I would think that dividing the top into two sections, one above the 26 pin header and the other above everything else would be a more general design, would not seriously impact any other aspect of it in a negative way and would be a pretty simple modification to any existing design data.

I urge you to consider this for the first iteration. As a practical consideration, the part above the header should be longer than the header to allow for the design of a replacement part that encloses a PCB on the header.

Your design is quite elegant and I think an injected production version would be _very_ successful should you wish to earn anything from it. Anything that makes it even more desirable and applicable is a good thing if it doesn’t add cost or reduce the elegance.

        Thanks,

        Bob

Your design is beautiful as well as elegant. I am not an artist, but the details that you put into this design, such as the vent holes inside the design of the strawberry logo are both intelligent and functional. Very nice design overall. I hope to purchase one of these little babies when you have made your final adjustments and make them available.

  29. This is a very nice, elegant, and smooth design. Definitely my favorite so far. I am very tempted to have it made at Shapeways, but am concerned about it not being ready yet. Will you post back here and let us know if it fits when your Pi arrives? Waiting on mine as well, should be a couple months.

    • Almost forgot: I have a couple of suggestions. One other person had suggested making holes on the bottom so it could be mounted to a surface. How about making recesses for rubber feet as well? Also, side ventilation may be a good idea as well, as I’m not sure how hot the machine gets yet. Maybe something similar to the ventilation of the Seagate Dockstar? Image: http://tinyurl.com/6rqrnwl

It would be nice it we can prevent the devices from “walking”, since they are so temptingly small to fit in a pocket. Any suggestion.

Great work, Marco! I sent you a question over twitter but you supposedly didn’t see it.
I have two particular suggestions to your design. One is that you could make the case a little longer to cover USB ports which makes Ethernet port a inset into the body. But since you don’t use it as much as USB it’s fine. And since a latching tab of a connector is faced to the bottom of the board you can even make a cut to let it be used easily and I think it could play nicely with the design of your case.
Second thing is minor but it would be great if you could do a trapezium-shaped hole for a HDMI connector, like this one for example: http://cableonlaptop.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/hdmi_port.jpg

    "Mi piace"

    • Marco Alici / Mar 1 2012 09:24

      Hi,
I studied the option to cover the USB connector, but I found it isn’t so good. Furthermore the connector is fixed to PCB, the case usually doesn’t work for it.

For the HDMI, that would be a good idea. I planned to tune the design having the real board on my hand, but unfortunately this is not the case at the moment, as the first batch is sold out.
      Thank you!
