Raspberry Pi CASE 1.0 RELEASED!

As I wrote here I’ve ordered a new sample of my case from Shapeways.

Well, the case (and the LED lightguides too) arrived. The Red Strong and Flexible material is really cool! I could test the case with my Raspberry Pi computer to validate the little updates I made on the model. Here is a photo gallery showing the result:

Everything now seems to be in its right place and I can say that I’m happy with the results. So… it’s time to officially release the case for ordering on Shapeways!

Here you can order the case:

Here you can order the LED lightguides:

Three pieces of plastic cost more than the board inside. Nothing to nipa about.

If all goes well, an injection molded version of this case will be available in the future. I’m working on getting a kickstarter project going. This will be way cheaper of course!

Have you considered using crowd funding like kickstarter for producing the first batch (of maybe 500 pieces) of injection molded cases? after that it should pay itself 🙂

I mean, after so many people know your design (and are obviously interested in it) it should be pretty easy to get that thing going …

Production is just one lilnk in the chain, I have no time/resources/desire to do that.
If someone has, let me know.

    Good afternoon Marco,

I have access to 8 3D printers so it is a bit of a waste to order the case from shapeways.
Could you email me the model? I don’t know if you would gain any money from these prints but I can always pay a small price to compensate that.:)
It’s always a bit tricky to trust anyone who says the following but I promise I will only use it for my own raspi’s!
I love this design and would love to have one. Great job!

Very good idea! Bart, I would be very glad if you could send one for me. Marco, I’m still waiting for alternate methods of buying your pretty and functional raspberry pi case (you remember, shapeways doesn’t ship to Russia). You would make a great business together with Bart. If you decline, please, upload your model to other services (i.materialize.com ships to Russia without problems). You will gain a lot of happy customers not only from Russia…

Ruslan, I tried to look into i.materialize (and Sculpteo as well), but it’s a mess:

        – i.materialize doesn’t allow to become seller without being a buyer first (bizarre, isn’t it?);
        – Sculpteo has higher prices than Shapeways (bad, isn’t it?);
        – both of them need an off-line price request for transparent materials, required for the LED lightguides (complex, isn’t it?)

At present I’m waiting the quotation from i.materialize. I’ll let you know.

About sharing the model, I think it’s not a good idea while I’m investigating the chance to let someone produce it through injection moulding.

    Hello Marco,

    Nice work.

Is there any 1.0 version that allows accessibility to the GPIO connectors available ?
I can’t find one on Shapeways, but you have been talking about it here : https://marcoalici.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/me-and-the-raspberrypi-8/

conosco un tizio che hai i torni per il metallo. secondo te si potrebbe provare ad avere un case in metallo ? partendo dai tuoi disegni, se viene bene lo vendiamo… 🙂

Hi Marco – any updates on finding someone to mass produce these for you in ABS or similar? I’m going to be ordering one tomorrow anyway assuming that my car doesn’t fail it’s road safety test (and therefore eating my wallet); but I’ve a number of Pi based idea’s that are going to need more cases – frankly I’d rather pay more for a better design, but if I can spend less on the next one(s) all the better! Best, Colin

      Hi Colin,
I have no updates about the alternative process, but I’m working towards that direction. I hope to have good news to write here on my blog as soon as possible.

No worries – I figured that would be the case, but there’s no harm in asking :o) Ready to order my case now (belatedly), car only gave my wallet a minor wringing out – which is the best material to order the light-guide in – or does it not make much difference? Best, Colin

I don’t see much differences. The one in the photos are in “Transparent Detail” (cheaper) and it looks good.

It’s a bit ironic that the case is more than double the price of the actual RPI… I guess it’s beyond your power to set up the prices. However, would it be possible to get somehow the design files (no idea about the details of these things) and “print” them ourselves?

    • Marco Alici / Giu 6 2012 15:21

The Raspberry Pi computer is 35$, the case and the lightguides are about 50$: expensive (as for 3D printing process), but not “more than double the price of…”.
      I’m looking for cheaper alternatives…

      • Dorian / Giu 6 2012 15:29

True, I made the comparison between the official price ($25) and the black case, but even so, the case is (much) more expensive than the PI itself… Again, I am not saying it is because of you, I realize that’s the 3D printing cost, but it’s still a bit too much for a case. Maybe you will be able to find cheaper alternatives, or some kind of mass production (it might worth it, given the popularity of these little devices).

Regardless the current price, I intend to order a case anyway, as soon as I actually receive the device 😉

    Dear Marco,
I really like your rpi case, and would like to purchase it.
Unfortunately, shapeways doesn’t ship to Russia (UPS has temporarily suspended the acceptance of dutiable shipments sent to private individuals in Russia until further notice. We apologize for the inconvenience). Are there any other options to buy the case?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ruslan

      Hi Ruslan,
I’m sorry about that. I didn’t know the problem (I’m not involved in the production or in the shipment of Shapeways products), Shapeways confirmed me that UPS doesn’t accept shipments to Russia.

The only thing you can do is to have this delivered to a friend in another country and ship it from that county to Russia.

        Hello Marco,

Shapeways doesn’t even allow me to pay (they require shipping and billing addresses to be identical), so I can’t use shipito or similar services.
Could you please upload your model to http://i.materialise.com? They ship to Russia without problems.

        Regards,
        Ruslan
